I’m Amy McCready, and I am here to provide simple solutions to your most frustrating discipline dilemmas.
Our question today is from Kelly K of San Jose, CA and she asks…
“What’s the best way to handle it when my parenting style is completely different then their father’s style?
He’s a command, demand type while I’d rather use positive parenting.”
DO’S & DONT’S CHECKLIST:
1. DON’T correct or criticize his parenting style. I know it’s tempting — but it’s only going to invite a power struggle between the two of you.. You want to avoid anything that will feel like judgment — because it will just make him get defensive and shut down.
2. DON’T disagree about discipline strategies in front of the kids. They’ll quickly learn they can to play one against the other for their advantage.
1. DO have a calm discussion about why you disagree on parenting and discipline styles. Explore how both of you were raised and the positives and negatives that resulted from that parenting style. Listen with an open ear and an open heart. Your objective is to get to common ground but you have to seek to understand his perspective first.
2. DO find one or two aspects of parenting and discipline in which you do agree. You’ll have more success if you focus on the few areas where do agree rather than spending a lot of energy on the many aspects of parenting in which you disagree. If you are enrolled in our PPS Online course — pick 2 or 3 of the tools in the toolbox that you both feel good about using and use those consistently.
3. DO keep doing what YOU’RE doing! Continue modeling the positive strategies that you know work well with your kids. If he sees that your kids are consistently cooperative and well behaved when you use those tools — he’ll be more likely to try them. Of course — when he does try them — resist the urge to give him an “I told you so” — don’t say a word and let him enjoy the results of using the more effective strategies.
4. DO ask yourself the question — “What do we want our child to LEARN from this experience or discipline opportunity?” That helps you focus on what will be most helpful to your child so they can make a better choice next time – rather than arguing over who’s approach is the “right” approach.

Welcome to the Positive Parenting Solution of the Week!
This week’s tip will help you minimize sibling rivalry and competition.
The unfortunate truth about sibling relationships is that there’s a natural sense of rivalry that sets in. There’s nothing you can do to eliminate it completely — but there are things you can do to minimize it.
It’s important to be aware of what parents unknowingly do to intensify rivalry. These seem like innocent gestures but they can have harmful and lasting consequences.
One of the biggies is to make sure we’re not comparing our kids through labels, spoken or implied. Because, If you’re the smart one, the pretty one, the athletic one — then I must be the opposite. If mom calls me her “wild one” — then that let’s you feel pretty “superior” and that’s a recipe that’s ripe for resentment, very.
Some labels are more subtle. If you hand your son a stack of plates to carry into the dining room and you say, “Now hold these very tightly and don’t trip over the rug.” He probably perceives himself as clumsy.
If you remind your daughter 15 times every morning to not forget her homework, lunch or PE clothes — you can bet she’s wearing the disorganized or forgetful label.
Another subtle but discouraging label is the Go-To Kid:
This is the child you can count on to complete a task competently and without much complaining—so whenever you really need something important done, you go to the go to kid.
However, anytime you don’t share responsibility evenly in an age-appropriate way, you tell your other kids that they’re not as significant or capable as your go-to kid. In doing so, you foster an atmosphere of competition.
As your kids get older and you’re more comfortable leaving them alone for short periods, it’s wise not to put one child in charge of anothe — this only fuels rivalry and one-upmanship. Instead, each should be responsible for himself and specific tasks — Evan for making lunch and pouring milk, and Jason for cleaning up after the meal.

How to beat your kids in the Dollar Store! Epic parenting tips for spoiled little brats

Little kid gets owned by her Dad. Child abuse? You be the judge! Being Dad! Every kid wants a toy EVERY time you bring them to the store. Christmas is the worst! You cant leave them in the vehicle for obvious reasons, and every thing in the store is designed to make your kids want something!! This video helps us laugh at our shopping problems. Song written and sang by the Dad and the daughter does the back up voicing. The concept idea and filming was all done in less than 1 hour including the lyrics. The little girl was instructed to just ad lib. She did a fantastic job and ultimately got that littlest pet shop toy that she wanted.
