Now, when you take your children to church, you are going to want to make sure that they are on their best behavior and that they make a great impression. So here are a couple of easy tips to teach your children so that they have wonderful manners when they go to church. First is that they need to walk in smiling and looking up. You do not want them to be moping and looking at the ground like they do not want to be there, that does not make the right impression. Also, when they meet people, especially for the very first time, you want to practice with your children ahead of time so that they can do it every single time they meet somebody, but it is to look the person in the eyes, smile, extend their hand, give a nice, firm handshake, say their name and it is nice to meet you. So, fore example, I would say, “Hello, I am Aimee Symington. It is nice to meet you.” If your children can do that they are going to make a great impression, what nice manners they have.
Also, children should be encouraged to call adults by Mr. and Mrs. So, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Jones, that type of thing, and never use their first name unless the adult has given them permission. Now, if you are in the Southern United States, children are also encouraged to say, “Yes, ma’am,” or “No, sir.” Using ma’am and sir are very polite things to say. Now, when your child is in the church, sitting in the pew, that is where they really need to put on their best show. So, encourage them to sit still, to have their feet facing forward, and to sit and listen. Now, with some of our younger children who have short attention spans, it sometimes is OK for you to bring something for them to look at, a simple picture book or a pad of paper and a pencil for them to use to keep them quiet during the church service.
Now, if your child is going to Sunday School, then they can certainly remember the basics of having polite manners such as saying please and thank you, no running around, and showing respect and kindness to others. So, talk to your children about these easy tips to have nice manners at church.
