I need help with my son who has aspergers and CAPD?

Published by admin on August 30, 2010

My son has difficulties "trying to get out his story" It seems like he is kinda stuttering but not exactly. What can I do as a parent to help and what should I ask for in his IEP? He has an IEP in place for his diag. of aspergers syndrome already but no one is addressing the speech problem

Sometimes you have to go beyond just having a school speech therapist. YOu have to get help from an outside source sometimes. I would talk to my physician and get some information from your family doctor. Special Education teachers and therapist are limited. I am a special education teacher and have written many IEP’s. My son also has an IEP for speech and we at times have to go for outside help.

He can definitely have a speech therapist! If his speech is not "that bad" but still having a few stuttering difficulties, the speech therapist will be able to work with him and have that solved in no time, trust me! But push for it as a parent and get the help he needs. Good luck!

Request that the IEP Committee reconvene and discuss this concern. As your son is not receiving speech therapy at this time, you will need to request that the speech therapist be present at the meeting as well as his other teachers and therapists.

Having everyone on board and aware of this speech concern will be very helpful. The speech therapist can do a speech/language evaluation including a language sample in order to assess the problem. For this to occur, the IEP team will need to request the evaluation through an IEP review/revision form. Once the evaluation is completed, the team will once again meet to discuss the findings and determine if adding speech and language therapy to you son’s IEP is appropriate to address this situation.

    Hope this helps!

You need to make sure that any evaluation includes something to look at Language Pragmatics. He may well have the words to use in a small group setting or with patient adults but the ability to use them in an appropriate setting, with typical peers, or to retrive quickly may be where the issue is. That is the part of language called Pragmatics.
