Will I be able to get income support on my maternity leave, single mum?
Published by admin on May 31, 2010I am pregnant, in full time employment, earning £32,000 annually. I will be a single parent, therefore as soon as my SMP starts of £124 per week I won’t be able to survive! Can I claim during this period income support? I won’t get anything else extra from my employer. Can I claim any other benefits? As soon as my maternity leave ends I would like to go back to work.
Could you explain why the taxpayers should support you when you decided to get pregnant when you knew you would not be able to support yourself and your baby?

You have maternity leave benefits, plus you’ve had months to prepare and save up what you need, plus the father is obligated to pay child support. You chose to have a child, and you chose to do this without getting married. Pay your own bills, or get the father to help cover costs. You are responsible for your choices.
